Regards croisés sur l’esclavage, 1794 - 1848 / improved 2nd edition of the catalogue
(Reunion Island, diverging viewpoints on slavery)
In December 1998, at the heart of the commemorations of the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery, an important exhibition set up by the Departmental Council archives, the Departmental Council library, the Léon Dierx art gallery and the Villèle museum displayed a number of original heritage documents bearing witness to a rich and complex period.
20 years later, the Departmental Council of Reunion committed itself to publishing a new edition of the 1998 exceptional catalogue, to which were added scientific explanations accessible to the general public, making it possible to assess the distance covered, as well as the challenges still remaining if we are to collectively come to terms with this chapter of our shared history.
